While American sororities might feel a world away from the Blue Mountains, the spirit of friendship, loyalty and support they represent is alive and well in Blue Mountains Musical Society’s (BMMS) third production for 2025. Legally Blonde The Musical which is set to open in October, is sometimes seen as a light-hearted story about chasing dreams in pink heels, however Legally Blonde is much more than that. At its heart, it is about the power of sisterhood, and in a unique dynamic, this production features two sets of sisters, (including twins), bringing an extra layer of real-life ‘sisterhood’ to the stage as they share the spotlight and the rehearsal journey together.
Erin and Kayley O’Reilly have performed in many previous shows together, most recently in BMMS’ 2024 production of Catch Me If You Can. Now playing Serena and Margot, respectively, in the Legally Blonde cast, the theme of sorority and sisterhood hits especially close to home for the sisters.
Kayley believes the experience has deepened their bond both on and off stage.
“Family is so important, and the combination of family and friendship creates a really special and strong connection,” she explained.
“Going to rehearsals together, practicing at home together, and chatting about our characters and how they interact with each other is really fun and makes me feel more comfortable about the whole thing.
“Erin’s such a talented performer and I feel lucky to be able to perform so closely with her, I feel like it makes me a better performer being able to bounce off her. It reminds me that she’s just as much a friend as she is my sister,” Kayley said.
For Erin, the heart of Legally Blonde lies in its celebration of sisterhood — a reminder that women thrive when they support one another, whether that’s in family, friendship, or within the Delta Nu sorority that features in the story.
“My sisters are everything to me. They have been my best friends and my worst enemies since birth,” Erin said.
“Having the Delta Nus support Elle Woods in what could be the best night of her life, but ends up becoming the worst night, standing by her in her biggest challenge, and something that seems so far-fetched — this is what sisterhood is. It’s supporting each other through dreams and heartache, no matter what.”
Newcomers to BMMS, twins Amber and Kristalea Dymott will together make their Blue Mountains Hub debut, both in the Delta Nu ensemble.
“Coming into an environment where most people know each other is always daunting, but having Kristalea with me throughout the auditioning process and through rehearsals made things so much easier,” Amber said.
With years of performing experience behind them, Kristalea and Amber have already worked side by side in several musicals.
“We have done three musicals together, and in one of them she was my stage manager,” said Amber.
“You can imagine how that went, as the older twin being bossed around by the younger one at sixteen years old. It’s safe to say this experience is a better one,” she joked.
“Having someone there I know I can count on for support and to go through what we learn together at home when one of us is struggling or has questions has created a really encouraging and positive environment,” Kristalea added, “especially considering the fast-paced nature of learning the musical.”
Audiences might come expecting a light-hearted comedy, but Legally Blonde also carries a message of not only sisterhood, but empowerment. It shows how women can lift each other up while staying true to themselves.
“The show demonstrates that women can stay true to their authentic selves and still be taken seriously in their educational and professional endeavours,” explained Kristalea.
“Elle goes on a journey of self-discovery and growth, learning that she can be both feminine and intelligent, that ‘pink’ is not the antithesis of success, showing audiences that to be powerful does not mean you must compromise your true self,” she said.
“Coming into this show I brought one sister with me, and already a few months in I feel like I'll leave with a few more sisters attached,” said Amber.
“Sisterhood is not just about your sisters connected by blood, but also the sisters who you find along the way.
“Legally Blonde encapsulates this perfectly and not only is the bond on stage strong, it is strong off stage as well,” she said.
With its mix of heart, humour, celebration of sisterhood and high-energy musical numbers, the show promises to leave audiences entertained from start to finish.
Kayley is sure that audiences will love Legally Blonde.
“It’s such a fun, energetic, uplifting and empowering musical that audiences will leave with smiles on their faces and humming along to the catchy songs!”
