Acclaimed director/producer ROBERT CHUTER is not a person prone to making conventional theatre & his acclaimed works have earned him a reputation as a distinctive director. He is a director who is constantly testing his audience. Chuter’s unique style has given audiences over 250+ complex, controversial & visually stunning productions in both theatre & films. 

Chuter was born in Carlton, Victoria, Australia on 23 April 1964, the only son of Rita (nee Spalding) and English immigrant Harry Chuter. Educated at St. Martin’s Theatre School, Melbourne Theatre Company Youth Theatre & Victoria College for the Arts (Drama School). In 1981, he was trainee director at the Queensland Theatre Company under the direction of the directors Alan Edwards & John Tasker. In 1983, he was accepted into the prestigious Swinburne Film & Television School along with such directors as John Hillcoat, Paul Goldman, Richard Lowenstein, Clayton Jacobson, Jonathan M. Shiff, Andrew Dominik, Alexsi Vellis, Gillian Armstrong & others. 

Chuter was Artistic Director of StyleAid – Transit 99 followed by the Melbourne Writer’s Theatre’s MelBorn08/Playspotting Season. He has conceived, curated, produced & coordinated many events, productions, exhibitions & readings over the last 20 years for Performing Arts Projects, La Mama Theatre, Fly-On-The-Wall Theatre, EHJ Productions, Peter Holmes a Court & Back Row Productions, National Trust of Australia, Queensland Theatre Company, Midsumma Festival, Comedy Festival, AtticErratic & numerous others.

Chuter has worked with local playwrights: David Allen, Colin Ryan, Daniel Lillford, Barry Lowe, Sam Sejavka, Alex Broun, Val Kirwan, Julia Britton, Max Richards, Jack Hibberd, Timothy Conigrave, Errol Bray, Ian Nash, Mark Andrew, Luke Devenish, Shaun Rigney, Mark Fletcher & overseas writers: Vince Foxall, Tom Smith, Krista Dalby, Steve Willis, Phillip Ridley, Alan Ball, John Logan, Matthew Todd & Jonathan Hall.

Chuter has also worked with artists Kent Morris on ‘The Double Infant’ & ‘The Kitchen Child’, Anthony Breslin & more recently with Josie Wadelton’ on ‘Defaced: The Exhibition’. He has produced two seasons of Midsumma Saturday Afternoon Playreadings at The Butterfly Club in 2005 & 2006 hosted by John Michael-Howson & Mark Lee followed by the Melborn08 Readings at ACOPA with Lucien Savron, Alex Broun, Ray Mooney & Rob George in 2008. Last year Chuter produced 4PLAY – The Chapel Midsumma Readings with Chapel Off Chapel hosted by Jane Badler, Marcus Graham & Anton Enus.
