James has spent a lot of time working in the field of musical theatre as a performer, musical director, and writer. During his time living in the ACT, he performed character roles in a number of theatre productions including as Woof Donovan in Hair (The Q), Schlomo Metzenbaum in Fame (Queanbeyan Players), Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Mr Davis in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (both Phoenix Players). He was the musical director for the CAT Awards for five years, and musically directed concerts Wayne Rogers and Michael Cormick. As well as playing keyboards in bands for numerous productions, he was also assistant musical director for Canberra Philharmonic Society's production of Les Miserables, The Q's producion of Blood Brothers, and musical director for Canberra Repertory Society's Jazz Garters IV in 2013.

Since moving to Sydney in 2014, James has found work in professional theatre, as assistant musical director for the Australian premiere productions of Heathers (SOH) and Sondheim on Sondheim (Squabbalogic). He has since become an ARIA-nominated composer for his work with prominent childrens' band The Beanies, with whom he has released six albums to date. He is currently studying his Bachelor of Music in composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
