I’m Michael Chan, 36 years old and currently living in Geelong. I worked for more than five years within the hospitality industry – as a Food and Beverage Attendant at various venues such as Flemington and Caulfield Racecourses, Melbourne Park and Marvel Stadium where I provide food and beverage to customers and cater for their needs. I am an actor/performer who works for the Geelong-based theatre company for actors with disabilities – Back to Back Theatre. With this company I undertook the Writing & Acting for Film & TV Project to further develop my skills behind the camera and on stage, as well as attending regular workshops include CAMP, Theatre of Speed. Theatre of Speed generates audacious, unexpected and enlightening work in a space that engenders social inclusion for those often marginalised from our society. In addition, I completed numerous works include as an extra in the movie as part of creative development called
Oddlands
, which appeared on ABC TV. In August last year I travelled to Hong Kong, as an Artist-in-Residence, to participate in the innovative Democratic Set project – a residency model using an interactive custom-made film set with a neutral room and two opposing doors, made out of wood to create a unique collective screen-portrait of a community. I took my artistic career and practice onto next level as I performed the production of
The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes
and toured both nationally and internationally, especially the United States. I previously appeared numerous extra roles in movies such as Miranda Nation’s
Undertow
, policeman in
Chinatown Cannon 2
. I also involved in the GSODA’s production of Chess: The Musical, which led me to be awarded with 2017 Geelong Awards for People with a Disability: Arts category and most recent Green Room Awards as part of the Best Ensemble.
