The ANU School of Music, in collaboration with the School of Art and the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics, presents two performances of Monteverdi’s groundbreaking opera L’Orfeo [Orpheus] in a visually stunning new staging directed by Cate Clelland and conducted by Peter Tregear.

The earliest surviving opera still in the standard repertoire, L'Orfeo is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, and recounts the story of his power as a musician, his extraordinary love for Eurydice and descent into Hades in an attempt to rescue her.

The production utilises a specially-commissioned digital set, designed by Milan-based award-winning Australian digital artist Andrew Quinn (Matrix, Tomb Raider), with lighting design by Alessandro Chiodo.

Performed in English using Anne Ridler’s wonderfully lyrical translation, in the stunning acoustics of Llewellyn Hall.

A cast of students, staff, and local and international musicians, is led by rising international tenor Nicholas Mulroy (UK) in the title role. Nicholas will be familiar to audiences fortunate enough to have heard the ACO’s acclaimed performances of JS Bach’s Christmas Oratorio last year. The cast also includes Paul McMahon (Apollo), Rachael Thoms (La Musica), and Krystle Innes (Messenger). The period orchestra is led by Rachael Beesley and includes Erin Helyard (Harpsichord), Tommie Andersson (Theorbo) and Matthew Manchester (Cornetto). The production also features the ANU Chamber Choir, ANU Chamber Orchestra, and many other special guests.
