Sydney Theatre Company and Adshel present
The Almeida Theatre Production
KING CHARLES III
By Mike Bartlett

Australian Premiere

The Queen is dead. Long live the King?

Sometime in the not too distant future, Prince Charles finally ascends the throne. And he quickly makes up for lost time.

Winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Play and lauded by critics and audiences alike, Mike Bartlett’s ingenious writing in King Charles III predicts the future in the vivid language and verse of a Shakespearean history play. This is an epic writ now.

Confronting the contradictions of a modern monarchy with wisdom and plentiful wit, the play reveals the people beneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracies and the moral conscience of our leaders.

Directed by Almeida Theatre Artistic Director Rupert Goold, this production comes to STC for an exclusive Australian season following its West End and Broadway runs. Audacious, provocative and insightful, this is drama with both a glint in the eye and a stiff upper lip.

"Splendid, high-reaching and utterly unexpected"
The New York Times

“Bold, brilliant and unstoppably entertaining. Theatre doesn’t get much better than this.”
The Times, UK
