Smoking With Grandma

13 Feb 2017 to 25 Feb 2017

First in Adelaide Fringe and Premiere in Australia

"I didn’t remember it was June or July, but it was the season of cicada…Your enemy is not the refugee, but the one who made one a refugee.”

Directed and written by HKADC emerging artist grant receiver Cathy SK Lam who created acclaimed play "The Immigration Lottery" and “Wither On the Vine”. Smoking With Grandma, a brand new writing about refugee will be premiered in Adelaide Fringe 2017.

Maia called 1996 the year of lost, the year before the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong, also the year her grandma passed away. Her grandma had spent most of her life in Tiu Keng Leng, a remote island in Hong Kong where it used to be a refugee village housing former Kuomintang officials and follower who escaped to Hong Kong from Mainland China after Kuomintang was defeated by the Communist; was demolished in the same year. Just the night before Tiu Keng Leng was going to be disappeared on the map, Maia went back to her late grandma's squatter. When Maia unveiled the buried secret of grandma, all she wants to do was a chance smoking with grandma.

"I left the theatre feeling challenged, pondering what freedom is, what the future will hold for Hong Kong, and what my identity is as an Australian." 4 Stars from Great Scott (The Immigration Lottery)

“Lam plays with this idea of a lost and distorted identity brilliantly and the theme and its political implications
gradually creep up on you.” 4 Stars from Broadway Baby (The Immigration Lottery)

“ThreeWoods Playwright‘s production of Wither on the Vine, a piece on looking at the people in Guangzhou, China, back in 1950s during the Land Reform period, is probably the best environmental heritage theatre I have ever seen in Hong Kong.” 5 Stars from The Typewriter (Wither On The Vine)
