The Telescope is inspired by the real-life case of China's Guizhou Province where over 9,000 people were forcibly removed from their homes in 2015 in order to make way for construction of the world's largest radio telescope, designed to search for extraterrestrial life.
Deep in Sydney suburbia, it’s the last night before construction of one such telescope is due to start, beginning with demolition of the Lipman home and their surrounding suburb. Lenny returns home to enjoy a final meal in the family home of 35 years with her parents Gil and Jane, and brother Daniel. She assumes that the family will use the government’s compensation to simply purchase a new family home, but her family have other ideas...
The Telescope is a gently absurdist piece that seeks to interrogate the very idea of family.
