The Australian premiere of Babette’s Feast
Two dutiful sisters. One tired village. And a stranger who takes refuge in both. Isak Dinesen’s much loved short story BABETTE’S FEAST is making its Australian premiere, August 5 – 14, 2021.
With 12 performances at Sydney’s Greek Theatre (in Marrickville), Babette’s Feast invites audience members to consider anew what happens when duty encounters the unexpected when hospitality meets the stranger.
Dates: 5-14 August 2021 (with two previews 3-4 August)
Performances: 7.30 pm evening performances, and two 1 pm matinee performances
Location: Greek Theatre, Marrickville
The play tells the story of Babette, a French refugee, who finds safety in a pious Norwegian fishing village. With extravagant generosity, Babette prepares a feast that shocks her neighbours and heals their fractured community.
Conceived and developed by Abigail Killeen, and written by Rose Courtney, this new stage adaptation premiered in January 2018 in Portland, Maine (USA), to rave reviews, before enjoying a successful run in New York. If you’ve seen the Oscar-winning film or read the story, you know that Babette’s Feast is a beautiful and timeless story with a big impact. And Joining the Dots Theatre can’t wait to introduce Babette and our amazing cast and crew to Sydney audiences!
A timely show for schools, community groups, neighbours and theatre friends.
As Babette says, “Through all the world there goes one long cry from the heart of the artist: Give me leave to do my utmost!’”
