Novelist Charles Condomine is married to his second wife Ruth. The eccentric medium Madame Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife Elvira. Elvira starts haunting him, determined to sabotage the new marriage. Further attempts by Madame Arcati to fix things lead to complications as Charles finds himself in an increasing comedic love triangle.
