Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte was composed as an opera buffa to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, who also wrote La Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. Its first performance took place in Vienna in 1790. The story features two betrothed couples, in which the young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, test the faithfulness of their fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, having been challenged to do so by a cynical, older bachelor, Don Alfonso. The maid, Despina also gets involved! Much confusion ensues amidst glorious singing, but all is forgiven in the end, as the cast praises the ability to accept the good and bad times in life.
