Leonard Weiss is well-known in Canberra as a conductor, composer and performer. He has worked on CAT Award winning productions of Barnum (2015), Guys and Dolls (2013) and Les Misérables (2010), performing on both French horn and tuba, in addition to being the Musical Director for Pied Piper Productions throughout 2014-15.
This is Leonard's first opportunity to conduct a full-length show run; he is extremely thankful for the opportunity to work with an exceptional cast, creative team, and especially to Elizabeth Alford for her incredible passion and dedication to Sweeney Todd.
Outside of the theatre, Leonard is the Musical Director and Conductor of the Canberra Youth Orchestra, the National Capital Orchestra, the ANU Choral Society and the Canberra Qwire. His recent career highlights include conducting jazz favourites with The Idea of North, a video game soundtrack concert (2017 Canberra International Music Festival) and the 67th Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival (2016).
Leonard's upcoming 2017 commitments include conducting James Morrison, Brahms' Double Concerto with Dimity Hall and Julian Smiles, and Handel's Messiah with the Canberra Choral Society. Leonard is looking forward to many exciting opportunities in 2018 including working with some of Australia's top soloists and conducting in the famed Munich Philharmonie.
Leonard has conducted and performed solo concerts in the USA and throughout Europe, including carillon performances in Belgium and along the East Coast of the USA. His compositions have been performed throughout Australia, Europe and the USA.
Locally, Leonard has conducted and performed as part of the Canberra International Music Festival and performed on harp for the Prime Minister at offi cial functions. He was the 2016 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year for Youth Arts and Multimedia, an ACT Finalist for 2016 Young Australian of the Year and recently received a Canberra Critics' Circle Award for Music.
