Of the three professional companies still operating in regional Australia, HotHouse Theatre is the largest and most successful in presenting an annual season of plays. As the only company in regional Victoria, HotHouse strives to develop and produce work that is valued in the local and wider community. HotHouse has served the Albury Wodonga region since 1979, when it was known as the Murray River Performing Group. In those years the company has provided its community with a diverse range of experiences and has contributed significantly to the cultural life of Australia: one of its school holiday programs for kids grew into the world famous Flying Fruit Fly Circus. In 1997 the MRPG recreated itself as HotHouse Theatre, with an Artistic Directorate driving the artistic work of the company. Since 1979 it has also added over 90 new works to the national store of Australian plays. It does this, in part, by facilitating a national creative development program ‘A Month in the Country’ in partnership with AlburyCity. HotHouse is one of only a few professional theatre companies dedicated to the commissioning, development and production of new Australian works. The company commissions writers, and invests time and money in the process of developing work, to ensure writers may fully explore their work and to guarantee that when it reaches the stage, it is ready. HotHouse aims to tours shows to, and conduct workshops in, small towns throughout northern Victoria, southern NSW and other parts of Australia. The company acts as a performing arts resource to the community in multiple ways. It coordinates a drama school and supports The Studio, a program offering the most talented young performers in the region the opportunity to train as theatremakers with Associate Director Travis Dowling and Artistic Director Jon Halpin. This program also provides performance opportunities, equating to a theatrical experience they would otherwise not have access to outside of metropolitan areas. It offers workshops for schools including devised drama, monologues, audition preparation and technical training and a festival for secondary students, known as Genereate.
HotHouse is the only company offering a 2-year full-time technical traineeship for a regionally based person. The TAFE accredited program includes design and operation of sound, lighting, props, sets, venue and equipment maintenance.
The company’s performance home is the Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga.
When not in use for HotHouse Theatre’s subscription season and associated activities, the Butter Factory is available to hire.
