For most Australians the images from the First World War are largely filled with males, soldiers marching, relaxing in billets behind the front line, in the trench, wounded on stretchers.  This ignores the truth for 2,139 Australians who served overseas, of whom 25 died.  These were The Girls in Grey of the Australian Army Nursing Service Reserve, and those recruited from the civilian nursing profession.

The Girls in Grey is a play that commemorates the service of the nurses who served during World War One and seeks to inform, educate and preserve the voices of these women for a new generation.

With the Centenary of the Great War on our doorstep, The Girls in Grey is both a timely and powerful story for all Australians.  Inspired by the diaries and letters of our own Australian Army Nurses, their stories are boldly realised in this vivid and candid retelling of life on active service.

Elsie, Grace and Alice leave our shores in 1914 determined to prove their worth and find adventure.  Serving in Egypt, Lemnos Island and the Western Front, they rally with courage and endurance as the tragedy of the war unfolds.  Commended by historians for its authenticity, and featuring a fine ensemble cast, this inspirational play brings the voices of the nurses into the world of theatre.

‘The Girls in Grey is a tribute to the courage of Australian Military Nurses.’ The Age

‘An artistic blend of history and theatre to preserve these precious stories and enlighten the generations of today and tomorrow.‘ Melbourne Observer
