The House Of Bernarda Alba
Melbourne Theatre Company presents
The House Of Bernarda Alba

25 May 2018 to 7 Jul 2018

With their mining-mogul father dead, the Alba household is in mourning. All four daughters have been called home to pay their respects by their mother, who is truly a force of nature. The future seems wildly uncertain for all but the eldest sister, who has inherited a fortune and is engaged to the local heartthrob. But as tensions rise and tempers flare, will any of them have the power to alter their own destinies?

Patricia Cornelius is one of Australia’s most eminent and awarded playwrights. In The House of Bernarda Alba she takes Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca’s classic tragedy out of the villages of Spain and into the heat of rural Western Australia. Themes of repression, passion, isolation and conformity, as well as the role of women in today’s society, are put under the microscope in this revealing and exhilarating adaptation.

This epic family drama directed by Leticia Cáceres (The DistanceThe Effect) features a superb cast including theatre legend Julie Forsyth (Endgame), Peta Brady (SHIT) and Bessie Holland (Wentworth) with Melita Jurisic (John) starring as the family matriarch.
