The Heartbreak Choir
Melbourne Theatre Company presents
The Heartbreak Choir

13 Jun 2020 to 18 Jul 2020

In this backwater country hamlet on the fringes of the commuter belt, the local choir was always the quiet heartbeat of the town. It brought people together. But then a devastating event shattered everything and split the town in two. Now, Choir leader, Barbara, and her friends must start a new choir – The Heartbreak Choir – and they have a lot to prove. Not just to the town, but to themselves. With no basses, no gigs, no Annual Arts and Culture Festival and a tentative rehearsal space in the old CFA Hall on the edge of town, this choir, more than ever, need to find a reason to sing.

Aidan Fennessy’s follow-up to one of our most beloved plays of 2018, The Architect, is an endearing new commission for MTC featuring songs by Leonard Cohen and other greats, which celebrates the power of comedy and reminds us how music can transcend adversity to give us hope for the future.

With a stellar cast including William McInnes (An Ideal Husband), Genevieve Morris (True Minds), Ruva Ngwenya (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) and Louise Siversen (Noises Off), and directed by a master of comedy, Peter Houghton (The Odd Couple), this big hearted story offers a joyous tale of healing and redemption.
