Rusalka in Chamber is an intimate semi-staged, costumed version with piano, of the much loved fairy tale opera by Antonín Dvořák.
Possibly every little girl has dreamed of being a mermaid, especially one as beautiful as Rusalka, who lives in the water of a lake in the forest.
Magical creatures share her lake and forest. The opera opens with Wood Sprites teasing the Water Sprite or Gnome, Vodnik and of course there is a Witch! The handsome Prince and Rusalka fall in love. Rusalka begs the Witch to make her human. Rusalka trades her voice for feet and a human soul. What could possibly go wrong? Soon the Prince tires of her and under the powerful influence of the scheming Foreign Princess, he deserts Rusalka. She begs for the Spell to be broken, but it only can says the Witch, if Rusalka takes a knife and kills the Prince. The Prince regrets losing Rusalka who has become a Will ‘o the whisp’ stuck between two worlds that no longer welcome her. Finally he reconciles with her and with her kiss, dies, while she is drawn back under the water, released at last.
Dvořák’s music is intoxicating and being filled with folk-tunes and heavenly melodies makes for easy listening. Rusalka in Chamber includes the famous ‘Song to the Moon’ aria and catchy dance music of the wedding scene. There are gorgeous trios for the Water Nymphs and thrilling music for the main characters.
