Janet Tweedie
ACT
Janet has substantial theatre experience and is a trained singer and actor. Janet began her theatre training in Perth in the early 80's with Wilson McKaskill at the Chimera School of Acting. The school taught in the style of the East 16 Acting School in London, where Wilson had trained, and over a 3 year period, Janet was instructed in stagecraft, improvisation, characterisation and script interpretation, and direction. The school was also a professional theatre group, with its own theatre and associated facilities. Upon graduation, pupils were invited to become members of the troupe and Janet was an active member of the Performance Group, being involved in a range of short and full length plays, including original scripts. At about this time, Janet also began her voice training, undertaking instruction with a number of classical teachers before settling with Mr Arthur Buss who trained Janet for 5 years. Janet also discovered a love of performing song when she began singing with a professional a capella group (Naughty Fish) and when she began working for Captain Cook Cruises as a crew member and entertainer on their Swan River Wine Cruises.
Janet was accepted into the Bachelor Degree, (Classical Voice) at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 1986, however due to personal reasons did not take up the offer. Instead, Janet concentrated on combining her love of acting and her love of singing and began performing with a range of community and semi-professional theatre groups in Perth. The first production that Janet was involved with was My Fair Lady with the Garrick Theatre. As a chorus member, Janet was able to combine her knowledge of stage craft and characterisation with her classical singing background and found that musical theatre was, indeed, her thing! My Fair Lady, not only as a wonderful show in itself, will always have a special place in Janet's heart, due to the fabulous experience she had as her introduction to musical theatre. Following on from My Fair Lady, Janet was accepted into the chorus of Oklahoma with the West Australian Musical Theatre Company (an offshoot of the West Australian Opera), a semi-professional production staged at the Regal Theatre starring Joan Sydney as Aunt Ella. Janet then took up the lead role in a cabaret style show produced by the Perth City Ballet which showcased a number of pieces from musical theatre. This was followed by the Perth City Ballet's production of Kiss Me Kate. Janet was also accepted into the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra Choir in 1990.
In 1991, Janet relocated to Canberra and refocused her life onto her three children and completing a Bachelor's degree and PhD in psychology. Five years ago, Janet went back to her singing lessons and has continued these under the tutelage of Jenni Reeves. Three years ago, Janet took the plunge and auditioned for Iolanthe with Queanbeyan Players, accepting a position in the chorus. Janet then undertook the role of Meg Brockie in Brigadoon where she first worked with Belinda Hassall as choreographer. Janet has since been an active chorus member for both Annie Get Your Gun and Kismet.
